Mr Adan De La Rosa came to Kingsville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center with several goals in mind. He is a diabetic and due to circulatory complications relating to his diabetes, he had required an above-the-knee amputation several years ago. His prosthetic leg was no longer fitting properly and his gait had become unsteady and he was fearful of falling. Mr De La Rosa was sure Kingsv ille Nursing and Rehabilitation Center could help him.
Mr. De La Rosa also needed to apply for the CBA program (Community Based Alternative). This program is provided by the Texas Department of Human Services for individuals with medical conditions that cause them to be dependent on others for assistance with daily acts, such as bathing grooming and dressing. It assist with minor home modifications so that patients can remain at home, also provides all medications needed by that patient. Currently, there is a 5-6 year waiting list for individuals in the community that apply for program eligibility. If a patiet meets the medical requirements for admission to a nursing home, and stays in that facility for 30 days, a CBA application can be completed, eligibility and approval can be determined in only 6-8 weeks ( in some cases longer).
Mr. Adan De La Rosa remained at Kingsville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for a short six weeks. He recieved physical therapy and restorative care during which his prosthesis was fitted and adjusted. He made numerous friends, he helped and participated in many of the acitivities. Mrs. Julia Macias woke up one day able to perfom her daily routines, which included taking care of her husband and a new responsibility: to feed a small toy poodle she had just purchased. She was wearing her husband's slippers which of course did not fit her feet; she tripped and fell, fracturing her left hip. This incident changed Mrs. Macias' daily routines dramatically.
She was no longer able to ambulate independently. Now she would require assistance with all her acts of daily living: bathing, grooming, transfers, and meal preparation. She was also aware that in order for her to regain the ability to ambulate and return home to continue with daily life, she would require intense physical and occupational therapy.
Her physician referred her to Kingsville Nrusing and Rehabilitation Center. On her admisson, Mrs. Macias was not able to ambulate or bear any weight on her injured hip. She recieved physical and occupational therapy five times a week, and by her day of discharge.
